this is a love-poem to you. the elk of your name. the fleet-footed foxes of your eyes. and those dunes, the sand-dunes of your skin, of your arms and chest. running my hands all over your body and trying to think straight while figuring out what it is that makes me crazy, crazy about your skin. and i appreciate the small brown forests of your hair, they’re tidy and classy and they’re very you, as much as your humor or the voice you use when you’re being sarcastic. the voice you use when you’re feeling vulnerable, the way it flatlines like the edges of the sea, the corners of the world. the voice you use when you’re making fun of me, the way it curves up like a smile, like the mountains curve up to meet the bedsheets of the sky. oh, it curves and i laugh and i’m doubled over on the hood of your car, blinking the city lights out of my eyes as you watch me with a smile. your smile, the straight-winged birds of it. the way you drive, the time you slipped your hand across my leg as you held the steering wheel with one hand, the blanket you keep in the back of your car for our stargazing extravaganzas. your predictability, the surprises you sometimes slip in my direction. the things i want to do with you. i’ll leave it at that because the stars are singing when i’m in your presence and you are the warmth i have been hoping for for quite a while. and there are crabs scuttling toward the sea in your ears, highways in your adam’s apple, and sometimes i ponder over the sharpness of your words, the bluntness of your public bravado and the way you shed that like layers of clothing when you’re around me. oh, the honey-bees below your skin, begging to be let loose. the well-tended herb gardens of your jaw and upper lips. the sharp sharks of your jaw, the rainforests and wooden tables of your hands, the doorways of your chest. the way you get caught up in kissing me. and i swear, sometimes when i get close to you i am under the impression that you’re the morning rain, the blood in my veins, the sunsets that keep me dancing around my room after the nights i spend with you.
